On October 25, 2019, we participated in the Open Parliament Forum on the Amnesty Law at the Chamber of Deputies, where we presented our recommendations to ensure that the proposal is accompanied by investment in social reintegration and prevention of reoffending. https://www.facebook.com/camaradediputados/videos/419883958715547/
One of the things people need for well-being is to feel comfortable in their work. When someone feels involved, accepted, and enjoys their work, they lose track of time, and the satisfaction it generates extends to other aspects of their personal life. The experiences generated in the workplace directly impact our psychological and physical health. In the long term, not adequately expressing our feelings and emotions leads to an inability to resolve everyday life situations and to feel and understand what others are going through. We work to train emotionally conscious women who help each other to bring out the best in themselves, and who, despite differences in opinions, cultures, and behaviors, do not forget that mood determines how we live and act at every moment of life. With this workshop, we seek to foster an Organizational Culture based on shared norms and values. We want our collaborators to develop competencies that allow them to feel active and committed to their work and to themselves. We encourage connection through emotional intelligence, empathy, self-awareness, assertive communication, empowerment, and teamwork with those around them, so that they can develop work skills and aptitudes that enable them to perform their work with greater passion, greater commitment, and above all, to discover the talents within each of them. FIRST EDITION 2019. This workshop has been held at the Barrientos and Santa Martha Acatitla prisons. It lasts 4 weeks, with each session being 100 minutes long, and has benefited approximately 40 women in total.
The way we relate to other people has a lot to do with the bond we form with our mother from the womb. Learning to form that bond in a complicated environment or at a distance is somewhat difficult, however, we are convinced that if worked on properly, this emotional relationship can be lasting, since a solid and healthy relationship with one's mother is associated with a high probability of establishing healthy relationships with others. Through this workshop, we aim for incarcerated mothers to learn to bond with their children through love, responsibility, and respect. Much of this workshop is approached from experience and support towards a stable and harmonious relationship with their children despite the distance and lack of communication. We share strategies with them to continue educating or to educate despite their current situation. We work on the hierarchical relationship towards respect for being mothers and not for moral reasons. We address techniques to identify and prevent risky behaviors in their children. Likewise, experiences and concepts about parenting styles are shared: authoritarian, permissive, neglectful, and democratic, with their pros and cons for each. This workshop works under two schemes: for women to recover the bond with their children if they have lost it, to maintain it, and to form it to establish a healthy attachment behavior in their children in their different life stages, and for motherhood and parenting to always be exercised by seeing the other with respect, love, and above all as a capable and autonomous being. FIRST EDITION 2017. "Responsible Motherhood" Workshop We benefited a total of 17 women in the Nezahualcóyotl Sur prison for an approximate duration from February to March 2017. SECOND EDITION 2019. "Motherhood and Parenting" Workshop We brought our workshop to the Ecatepec Prison and had the participation of 27 women deprived of their liberty and their young children, during 6 weeks of 90 minutes per session.
Fostering trust and mutual support to change deeply rooted rules regarding the conception of rivalry and competition among women is very important for La Cana. Therefore, we seek to generate changes so that our collaborators embrace the idea that when you help one, you help all! We aim to emphasize the feeling of sisterhood among women regarding social gender issues. Solidarity is the foundation of this workshop, where we discuss common situations in which we have been seen at a disadvantage compared to our male peers and our own sex. Solutions are proposed to show that when women come together, they can achieve incredible things and that being a woman should not work against us. The objective of this workshop is to raise awareness about the importance and benefits of adopting a sisterly mindset. We seek for them to learn to see other women as companions despite social influence, through the creation of a playful space that is guided by communication and listening, where deep reflections on empowerment and the importance of respecting and supporting our equals can begin. Through awareness strategies and the promotion of values, we aim to reduce all forms of social oppression that have been established among women and that patriarchy has exerted on the sex. We encourage mutual support to achieve the generic empowerment of all and the vital empowerment of each woman. FIRST EDITION 2019. Workshop "Let's be companions, not rivals!" Implemented in the Barrientos prison and lasting 4 weeks with 90-minute sessions, it has benefited 21 women.
Education is a right for all people, and this right must be respected and fulfilled regardless of the context and circumstances in which one finds oneself. This means that being deprived of liberty is not a valid argument for people in that position not to enjoy the opportunity to educate and re-educate themselves under healthy conditions aimed at fostering comprehensive education that allows them to develop life skills. In our country, education for many is a matter of privilege, a privilege that, unfortunately, many of the women we work with did not benefit from. Adding to this, prison education is diminished by a convoluted and confusing web of stereotypes and myths that are generated daily about incarcerated individuals. Society is responsible for highlighting their perceived lack of worth as people. This results in an education that takes hold of the thoughts of the person deprived of liberty, turning them into mere voiceless objects, objects that have to adjust to a system where they are reminded every day that they must pay for their crime and the harm to society, but they are never taught how, they are not taught to critically reconceptualize their actions, or how to make the most of prison life so that the people who live there achieve their own liberation and become aware of their future life. Most of the women we work with have barely completed basic education, which is why at La Cana, we seek to help incarcerated women develop skills such as responsibility, creativity, teamwork, emotional intelligence, communication, empowerment, assertiveness, empathy, active listening, respect for rules, etc., through all our programs, thus promoting personal fulfillment and better social performance. We work to achieve this through evaluation, constant and controlled attendance at psychology workshops and job training, providing them with activities such as yoga, reading, painting, and poetry. We seek for women to transcend and learn to see their situation as an area of opportunity, an opportunity to learn, to grow, to value and improve their quality of life. We seek to teach and transmit that a life away from crime can be built.
