SUMMARY OF THE INITIATIVE REGULATING PENITENTIARY LABOR

PROPOSAL OBJECTIVE Incorporate rules for prison labor to ensure basic conditions and benefits for workers, create an environment conducive for more people to provide dignified employment opportunities which, in turn, contribute to inhibiting recidivism. JUSTIFICATION The Mexican State must provide the necessary means for persons deprived of liberty to exercise their rights and achieve social reintegration. A fundamental means for this is work; however, there is no adequate regulation that contributes to the generation of skills and opportunities for dignified and remunerated employment in prison. In Mexico, most persons deprived of liberty are young people of productive age, many from conditions of poverty. Approximately 13% re-offend upon release from prison, given the great difficulty in re-entering the labor market. Currently, opportunities to develop productive activities within prison are minimal, or are not carried out under optimal conditions. The National Law on Criminal Enforcement provides for the modalities of work within prison, but does not include harmonized rules or criteria that ensure the organization and operation of work and training programs, within a full framework of respect for human rights. This has allowed, on the one hand, the violation of rights and labor exploitation and, on the other, has discouraged the participation of the private sector in providing employment opportunities. SUMMARY Several articles are added to the National Law on Criminal Enforcement to establish rules and mechanisms that allow for: Supervise the participation of the private sector in order to prevent the violation of the rights of persons deprived of liberty; Have transparent processes for the selection of persons deprived of liberty seeking access to job vacancies; Diversify employment training options, in order to guarantee training free of gender stereotypes that allows men and women to develop technical and professional skills, in equal conditions, in accordance with the demands of the labor market; Facilitate access for persons deprived of liberty to information about their administrative and labor situation within the detention center. In particular, regarding the remuneration corresponding to the work activities to be performed; Guarantee remuneration as an essential right to work and an important element for the reintegration of persons deprived of liberty. The penitentiary system must provide the necessary means for people deprived of liberty to exercise their rights and achieve social reinsertion. A fundamental means to achieve this is work; however, there is no adequate regulation that contributes to the generation of skills and opportunities for dignified and paid employment in prison. In Mexico, there are around 200,000 people deprived of liberty. The majority are young people of productive age from impoverished backgrounds. Recidivism rates reach 25% of people released from prison, who find it very difficult to re-enter the labor market. Currently, opportunities to develop productive activities within prison are minimal. The absence of regulations for work inside correctional facilities has, on the one hand, allowed for human rights violations and labor exploitation and, on the other hand, has discouraged private sector participation in providing employment opportunities. For this reason, at La Cana, we are promoting an initiative to regulate and promote prison labor. Through a reform of the National Law on Criminal Enforcement, it is proposed to incorporate rules for prison labor, in order to guarantee basic conditions and benefits for workers, create a favorable environment so that more people can provide dignified employment opportunities that help people have tools to avoid returning to crime and the same offenses once they are released. Prison labor must allow people to meet personal needs within prison, contribute to their families outside, and obtain resources to cover the reparation of damages caused to their victims. — That is why we invite you to join this campaign. WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP

As part of our Education, Culture, Art and Sport Program, Polly Jimenez's studio: Short Stories, started this 2020 by holding a watercolor workshop with the theme "who am I" in the Chiconautla and Santa Martha Acatitla prisons, on January 27 and 29, respectively; hoping that the women deprived of their freedom, in addition to learning the watercolor technique, would carry out exercises of self-knowledge and self-recognition, seeking to encourage them to look in a mirror and see themselves as they are, by exploring parts of their face through drawing, parts they may have never paid attention to, and thus recognize themselves as individual and unrepeatable beings, worthy of self-love and deserving of respect for themselves.
CHRISTMAS POSADAS

2019 Edition Santa Martha Acatitla On December 4th, La Cana, along with volunteers from the British Council Mexico, Cats With a Heart, and FES Aragon, celebrated our first Christmas posada with the inmates of this prison. We organized various games and integration activities that allowed us to get to know each other better and have fun. We also held a conference on Personal Development and distributed personal hygiene kits that we received from your donations. Thank you very much for joining us! Barrientos Prison On Tuesday, December 10th, we celebrated our posada at this prison, accompanying and celebrating the holiday season with our weavers. Our volunteer, Maria Sánchez de Tagle, led a ceremony to close the year and leave behind all negative energies, so that every day of 2020 we can grow more and together continue to support more women. Many thanks to everyone who supports us in making this possible!

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic form of yoga. Vinyasa literally means a system of synchronized movements and breathing. These movements link one posture to the next. Each posture is meticulously designed with a specific number of movements and breaths so that our students will link the postures by faithfully following the rhythm of breaths and movements.
Reading and Writing Workshop

The workshop seeks for women deprived of liberty to learn to write any type of document effectively and clearly, from a letter to a literary text. The workshop is divided into four modules that comprise four basic topics through readings, a writing workshop, and comprehension of grammatical rules. A continuous dialogue is maintained with them for team integration and awareness, to get to know each other and their preferences in terms of readings. Through a very light and enjoyable chat, we will discover each person's interests to personalize the topics to be written. Dynamic writing exercises, reading some newspaper articles, books, and magazines.
