Day of the Dead

Daniela,
30 Nov 2019

Mexican traditions are a reflection of the great country that we are; they show our beliefs, love, fears and the way we see life. As part of the cultural activities in November, we took a literary skull and offering contest to the prisons in Ecatepec and Neza Sur to remember the origin of the tradition, celebrate Mexican customs alluding to the Day of the Dead in Mexico and as tradition dictates so that they could remember and commemorate all their loved ones who are no longer with them in this life. For this cultural celebration, with the help of Uber and We Work, we brought kits with all the necessary materials to make a typical Day of the Dead offering. That's right! We even brought marigolds, cardboard, and colored sheets for their literary skulls. Three winning teams were chosen and all received different stationery items as a prize. And, as expected, we closed the celebration by eating bread of the dead and chocolate milk.

We are part of the #FutureLeadersConnect program, which aims to promote public policies that drive social change in Mexico. Through this program, we receive mentoring on leadership and public policy issues, as well as connections with mentors and important allies to promote our project and maximize its impact. At the end of October 2019, we were invited to the University of Cambridge, where we participated in various workshops and conferences, in order to strengthen our vision of public policies and share the work we do at La Cana with more than 50 young leaders from 13 countries, as well as members of the British parliament, activists, NGOs and members of the diplomatic corps.

We were one of the three finalists for the UBS Social Entrepreneur Award on September 9th, a call to recognize entrepreneurs who have conceived a successful model of social impact and a viable, effective, and sustainable model of systemic change in Mexico. For the first time in the award's history, the Selection Committee proposed to follow up on La Cana's project and growth, providing support and advice to achieve our stated goals and objectives. December 8, 2019. As part of our participation in the #Visionaris2019 UBS award, we held a follow-up meeting with the Selection Committee, who will be our mentors in financial and strategic planning to grow and replicate our project. We were also invited to a cocktail and art exhibition in Bellas Artes, where we had the opportunity to meet important allies. Thank you very much for joining the cause!

We inaugurated our workshops at the Santa Martha Acatitla prison in Mexico City! On June 18, 2019, we trained 12 inmates in sewing, in collaboration with @vainilla.arte, where we will also have human development workshops. We want to thank Unleash, because thanks to the award they granted us, this was possible. We are very happy to replicate our project in this fourth prison, in our 4th year of existence.
