The Digital Equity Accelerator, a project of the Aspen Institute in collaboration with HP, Inc., works to advance social and economic equality by investing in nonprofits and NGOs that are accelerating digital inclusion. Founded in 2022, the Accelerator has successfully helped seven organizations from India, Morocco, and the United States scale, increasing their cumulative reach by 1.7 million people and counting. In 2023, the Accelerator expanded its programming to ten organizations across Malaysia, Mexico, and South Africa. La Cana was one of four Mexican organizations selected to continue and accelerate education and training programs for women deprived of liberty and released from prison, working to improve their social integration and allowing them to support their families upon their release. The NGOs were chosen from among 120 applicants in a process that prioritized reach, impact, commitment to digital equity, and meaningful connections to the communities they serve. They will receive technology solutions from HP; around $100,000 USD in direct capacity-building support; and access to a strong network of international leaders, mentors, and coaches with experience in technology, social innovation, nonprofit management, and social impact. Additionally, the Accelerator will provide those selected with opportunities for visibility on a global stage, including connections with local and international media. HP is powering the Accelerator with technology solutions for each participating organization, in line with its commitment to advance digital equity for 150 million people around the world by 2030.

We all have a relatively stable tendency to explain the negative and “failure” situations that occur in our lives. This is known as explanatory styles and these styles create realities; the immediate reality and the future reality. In the workshop Understanding My Mind we aim to help women understand how reality is interpreted, how two people can have different interpretations and actions in the same situation. We analyse how these explanations include their opinion of the circumstances, their self-image and the image of other people. In this group intervention, we review how the mind works and how thoughts affect the way we act and feel. We analyze the relationship between thoughts and well-being, as well as the main patterns that the mind follows, and we recognize the difference between negative thinking and positive thinking. realistic as a way of taking responsibility for what you think and how you do it. interact with that everyday reality. “Raise Your Voice for All” Workshop

In Mexico, 10 women die every day. This unfortunate figure leads us to understand that gender violence is a serious social problem that reveals the inequality that exists towards women. Since this is a phenomenon that transcends without limits age, educational level, economic status or place of origin, we seek the most appropriate measures to prevent and get ahead of any situation that involves violence in any of its forms. Raise Your Voice for All is a workshop strategically designed to address and prevent gender violence. We seek to ensure that, despite exclusionary social norms and discriminatory laws, spaces to talk about, recognize, understand and address violence are open in any setting and at the service of women. We work from basic concepts to social responsibility, with the aim of making visible that violence is not exclusive to private spaces nor does it occur due to a single variable. Sensitization exercises and techniques, psychoeducation, and introspection are some of the strategies used so that women identify risk factors from a more personal level and develop protection factors according to a value system based on non-violence. FIRST EDITION 2020. Workshop "Raise Your Voice for All! Implemented in the Barrientos, Ecatepec and Neza Sur prisons for 10 weeks, each session lasting 100 minutes, and benefiting 58 women.

Have you ever imagined what medical care is like inside prisons? Access to health care for women who are deprived of their freedom becomes a luxury that should be a right for everyone. In an environment where, as women, caring for themselves and raising awareness about their well-being takes a backseat, at La Cana we want to support them so that their health becomes a priority. We seek to provide women in prison with the necessary care to reduce cases of breast cancer, which in the long term can become a major condition that is unsustainable to pay for. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women. Every day, 18 women die from breast cancer in Mexico. Awareness and early detection can reduce these numbers. In Mexico alone, 1 in 3 women is diagnosed in time. For this reason, in this month of breast cancer awareness, we are joining forces with Fundación Pro Mujer and its most recent health project: Ami Cuidado. A gender-focused health platform that seeks to provide high-quality health services to women and their families in Latin America. Our goal is to provide our knitters with early detection and awareness about this disease. 95% of breast cancer cases could be curable if detected early and treated properly. La Cana's position on the ruling that expands the catalog of crimes that merit preventive detention

We urge that the ruling on secondary laws on pretrial detention be rectified and not approved. Automatic imprisonment has only increased the number of people imprisoned without receiving a sentence, without reducing the number of victims in Mexico. We trust in the commitment of legislators to seek solutions that contribute to strengthening the Justice System and effectively address insecurity and impunity in the country. On April 12, 2019, the reform to Article 19 of the Constitution was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation to expand the list of crimes that merit pretrial detention. At that time, various organizations expressed our concern about a reform that is contrary to international standards and due process, which would increase the likelihood of imprisoning innocent people, We note that in the face of the crisis of insecurity and violence that our country is facing, it is essential to strengthen the Accusatory Criminal Justice System and contribute to social reintegration. On the contrary, the Executive and Legislative Powers have opted to increase the sentences for a considerable number of crimes and the cases of origin of pretrial detention, a measure that should be applied exceptionally and as a last resort. Unfortunately, these measures have increased Without due analysis, without evidence that automatic imprisonment serves to combat crime, and in the context of a pandemic that has highlighted the risk that imprisonment entails for the lives of people deprived of liberty, today the Senate of the Republic intends to discuss and approve a ruling for the harmonization of the secondary laws of the reform to constitutional article 19. We urgently call on legislators to rectify and jointly build strategies that, without arbitrarily violating human rights, contribute to strengthening the Justice System and effectively address insecurity and impunity in Mexico.
Volunteering in La Cana

The volunteers who invest their time and efforts in the projects play an extremely important role in La Cana. Thanks to their solidarity and altruism we have been able to carry out a series of activities, workshops, programs and collections that perhaps without their help, we would never have. we would have achieved. Today, La Cana, AC Social Reintegration Project has more than 40 people who volunteer in our project. Our volunteers work in the different areas that we cover inside and outside the prison. In the area of mental health, we have had the support of volunteers who teach workshops on logotherapy, motherhood and parenting, meaning of life and who currently provide individual therapy to women in our release monitoring program. Likewise, we have had the support of painters, yoga instructors and teachers who have helped us promote Education, Art, Culture and Sports programs. The volunteers have taught incarcerated women their knowledge to develop or strengthen new skills in watercolor, painting, yoga, reading and writing, as well as meditation inside prison. On the other hand, we have participated with various companies such as Uber Eats, We Work, and KPMG to carry out recreational activities within the prison. Corporate volunteering helps us motivate a large number of women deprived of liberty to participate in the activities of La Cana. Within this type of volunteering we try to create a link between the women deprived of liberty and the volunteers so that both parties can benefit from the experience. In corporate volunteering, classes have been taught so that volunteers can learn the techniques of the products that women deprived of liberty make, they have participated in making altars on the Day of the Dead, as well as organizing Christmas posadas within of prison. Volunteering is one of the best tools society has to change things. We work with extremely supportive and generous people who contribute to creating our country's prisons in places of opportunity.
