That makes us different?

La Cana is a social project that seeks to create job opportunities for women in prison, through the implementation of programs and workshops that aim at their personal development, as well as work and training for it, in order to promote a process of reintegration that contributes to reducing the rates of recidivism and crime in the country.

How does it arise?

It arises from having shared the experience of visiting, while we were university students, the Barrientos prison in the State of Mexico. Experience, from which, we agree with the idea that seclusion cannot be synonymous with exclusion.

Having had the opportunity to learn about the undignified conditions in which our country's prisons are found, but above all the life stories of those who are deprived of their freedom there, allowed us to understand that the problem of insecurity cannot be resolved alone. isolating and setting aside; but by attending to and facing the structural causes, the motives and the social, psychological and family reasons that led that person to act in a certain way.

It allowed us to understand that penitentiary centers have not had an effective result, because they have set out to prevent people from continuing to commit crimes, without combating idleness and without offering their inmates the opportunities and elements that allow them to choose another life option. a place away from crime.

This is how La Cana emerged: A project to bring productive activities and training for a trade to prisons, through which inmates could acquire skills and tools that would help them improve themselves, stay inside the prison, provide an income to their families, and above all, prepare them to face the challenges of life in freedom.

What do we do

We provide sustainable sources of income to women deprived of liberty, who find it difficult to find a job in which they feel productive, dignified, and which is also economically remunerated.

We seek that upon obtaining their freedom, women acquire a trade and work knowledge tools that allow them to obtain an income with which they can become a breadwinner for their families.

Through La Cana's activities we promote values ​​such as: Discipline, Effort, Commitment and Teamwork.

We complement it with programs and workshops aimed at their personal development, and collaborating with the task of addressing psychological and emotional reasons that contribute to their reintegration process into society.

Likewise, we seek to bring people deprived of liberty closer to culture and the arts as a means of expression, with the aim of contributing to their individual development and transformation, in addition to reducing aggression and increasing the productivity of inmates.

How do we do it?

  1. We train women deprived of liberty in various techniques of weaving, embroidery, sewing, macramé and textile weaving.

    We seek that upon obtaining their freedom, women acquire a trade and work knowledge tools that allow them to obtain an income with which they can become a breadwinner for their families.

  2. Subsequently, we are in charge of carrying out the sale of the products

    Handmade by women in prison, to whom we deliver the proceeds from the sale of their work.

    In addition to the above, we carry out other productive tasks for the development and learning of skills and abilities; as well as mental health workshops for the personal growth of inmates.

  3. We seek to actively influence public prison policies that promote social reintegration

    Of people deprived of their liberty, and we sponsor the defense of women who have suffered serious violations of their human rights.
